Additional information
This paper is the result of a three-year collaboration with Newcastle University. The lack of availability of fibre/freeze/thaw test data and the fact that concrete is the most widely-used material Worldwide (Chemistry World, 2008) was a key factor in its justification. Industry once used polypropylene fibres as freeze/thaw protection but gave up this approach due to lack of agreement as to fibre performance (Cemex 2004). This paper addresses this failing and will support fibre use commercially as an alternative to the current industry standard approach of air-entrainment.
