Fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) has a lower carbon footprint than steel, is corrosion resistant and is more sustainable. FRP is also preferable to steel in situations (e.g. magnetic resonance imaging facilities and automatic guidance systems at airports) where the latter would interfere with equipment performance. There is currently an absence of agreed National / International Standards on FRP, and Clarke (1997) points out that a ‘register of [FRP] products’ would be ‘a great advantage to potential users’. This paper adds to that body of knowledge.
