Additional information

An output of an international collaboration, this paper introduces enhanced genetic algorithm (GA) operators such as geometric crossover and boosted mutation. Geometric crossover is applied on the phenotype building blocks (a new concept also introduced in this paper) rather than the genotype chromosome. As a result, significant improvement in the performance of GAs is achieved. The application of the new concepts of geometric crossover and phenotype building blocks has been extended to various types of structures such as trusses, chain mechanisms and wind turbine blades. The paper ranked 17 in the journal's most downloaded papers during April to June 2011.
