Ugolini undertook oral history fieldwork which created a unique dataset of interviews with forty six Italian Scots. This was achieved over five years as it proved extremely difficult to find people willing to talk about the war and she relied primarily on ‘word of mouth’ recommendation. Systematic research was undertaken in seven different archives. At Kew, she tabulated individual index cards to establish the number of Italians interned in Scotland. Ugolini carried out a systematic analysis of the World War Two Roll of Honour to provide the first estimate of British Italians who served in the army from 1939-45.
