Analysis of unsteady flows past horizonatal axis wind turbine airfoils based on harmonic balance compressible Navier-Stokes equations with low-speed preconditioning
The developed Harmonic Balance (HB) Navier-Stokes (NS) technology computes the hysteretic force loops of wind turbine blades subject to periodic aeromechanical excitation 10 times faster than conventional time-domain methods. The study also discusses and solves an outstanding numerical issue hindering the stability of explicit multigrid integrations of the HB NS equations. The technology was recently implemented in the commercial CFD code STAR-CCM+ used in industry for turbomachinery blade, fixed and rotary wing unsteady aerodynamics and aeroelasticity. The HB NS technology is also a key feature of the COSA CFD design system being developed by Campobasso. Research funded by EPSRC (EP/F038542/1).
