Additional information

World-first for operational automated vibro-lance ground compaction, one among very few examples of site-based intelligent construction robots in the literature. The article describes the multidisciplinary nature of the research (sensors, actuators etc.) but focuses on the control systems that lead to increased speed of operation and improved accuracy in comparison to a skilled human operator. It was tested by the collaborator Bachy Soletanche Ltd (steve.ako@bacsol.co.uk) at construction sites in Leeds and Liverpool. This research followed directly from methods developed during EPSRC Grant GR/R94442/01 (for which Taylor was the PI).
