Additional information

Cartmell commissioned and edited 24 chapters (200,000+ words) by scholars in Europe, the US and Australia, shaping the collection according to history, approaches, genres, authors, periods, popular writing and writing for cinema. Cartmell contributed 2 of the 24 chapters, ‘100+ Years of Adaptations, or Adaptation as the Art Form of Democracy’ (pp.1-14), contextualising the critical neglect of adaptation studies from the inception of cinema to the current day, and a chapter on the 1929 adaptation, Sam Taylor’s The Taming of the Shrew (pp.70-84), the first analysis to consider the relevance of sound to the first Shakespeare ‘talkie’.
