Substance - Residues, Drawings and Partial Objects 1976-2008.
The Substance book and exhibitions include artefacts and documentary materials (posters, scores, drawings, videos) from performances from 1976 to 2008. Both book (2008) and exhibitions (2008, 2010) are presented here as new work within the REF census period because they are forms that create a new relationship between object and live performance. The exhibitions use the arrangement of objects – open to handling and rearrangement by visitors – to suggest that the objects pieces – scores, drawings, found and fabricated objects, prints, paintings – possess some ‘substance’ or value beyond their status as components in an event of performance art. The exhibitions build upon earlier investigations (pre-2008; see pp. 14, 60, 61, 64, 181), and this relationship is discussed by Roms in her essay, pp. 12-21. As Roms indicates, this transforms exhibition from being a straightforward ‘putting on show’ with objects tied to events, to being an occasion where the traditional art object–viewer distinction breaks down and a free-play of meaning is generated by visitors wilfully or mischievously reorganize the archive.
