This volume accompanies the restoration of an archive of films that were made at the turn of the 19th-20th century by the assistant to the Mariinsky’s choreographer Marius Petipa. The articles on the discoveries of drawn animation, dance films, trick films and puppet animation have placed Shiryaev into a historical context of all these disciplines and have led to numerous public screenings as well as rewriting of film history (re-dating puppet animation) and restoration of “lost choreographies” in ballets.
