Lithium niobate transducers for MRI-guided ultrasonic microsurgery
This paper covers the development and demonstration of devices for MRI-guided ultrasonic microsurgery. Focused ultrasound surgery (FUS) is a burgeoning field with many applications including treatment of cancer. However, the targeted areas are large i.e. ellipsoids ~1cm long, 3mm dia. This paper demonstrates smaller lesions are possible and that it will be possible to apply this to e.g. the skin or the wall of the bowel, to treat forms of cancer presently beyond the scope of FUS. The work supported two successful EPSRC bids, EP/K020250 Ultrasound in a needle (£0.9m) and EP/K034537 Sonopill (£6.4m), involving a total of ~20 companies.
