This invited paper formed the foundation for research on novel designs using computational fluid dynamic techniques in the subject area of neonatology. The work formed part of a major EU funded, €2.4m Marie Curie grant (MEST-CT-2005-020327 COFLUIDS), coordinated by the University of Leeds with consortium membership from EU/UK academia, hospitals and industry. The project has provided input to the novel design of new infant warmers and modifications to existing units to minimise heat loss from under-weight infants and maintain constant temperature. This has led to dialogue with equipment suppliers Fisher & Paykel Healthcare (Ali.Borojerdi@fphcare.co.nz) and Hammersmith Hospital (d.azzopardi@imperial.ac.uk).
