Freud on Holiday. Volume IV. A CAVERNOUS DEFILE, PART I
Kivland meticulously re-constructs Sigmund Freud’s journeys to European sites, employing the psychoanalytic concept of deferred affect (Nachträglichkeit). Each book addresses a holiday (1886 to 1923), the cultures and environs that Freud visited, her own experiences in retracing his journeys, investigating a particular text in Freud’s work. Chapters were presented at the Art Historians Conference, March 2012, and Book Live Conference, University of the South Bank, June 2012 (publication, RGAP, 2013). Kivland gave the Chichester Art Lecture (National Arts Fund), October 2012.
The series includes four appendices, from German and French publications of Freud’s holiday correspondence (Kivland’s translation): 'Freud’s Weather'; 'Freud’s Dining', 'Freud’s Hotels', 'Freud’s Shopping'. It is reviewed in Wood, 'Oxford Literary Review', Viss, De Gids (blog site), and features in three issues of the 'Windsor Review' (first: December 2013). It is cited in Dixon-Hunt, Lomas, Corris (eds), 'Art, Word, and Image. 2000 Years of Visual/Textual Interaction' (Reaktion, 2010).
