Hollywood cinema and the real Los Angeles
Comprising 336 pages, 115,000 words, and 88 previously unpublished historical photos, maps, and tables, this 2012 book took seven years to write. It provides a methodologically ground-breaking 'spatial history' of the 'Hollywood' film industry circa 1910 to 1960 through historical and geographical documentation, urban and architectural theory, and close film analysis. The book required an exceptional research effort in Los Angeles archives, uncovering real estate and city and regional planning documents hitherto ignored by film historians, and encompassing an exhaustive dataset of films: chapter 4 alone used a new type of quantitative analysis to examine 518 examples of film noir.
