This work was undertaken in collaboration with the US Air Force Research Lab, North West Research Associates and the South African Space Agency. The paper compares the performance of two assimilative models of the ionosphere. It is the first such paper to make use of the network of four vertical ionosondes in the Republic of South Africa. This network allows for the assimilation of data from one ionosonde, whilst retaining the rest to act as truth data. The paper has led to renewed interest in the development of products that combine output from multiple, independent models.
