Additional information

This is the first paper on the use of left handed (metamaterial) loaded transmission lines in printed wire antennas. Metamaterial loading in microstrip like antennas has efficiency problems which are reduced by the use of wire antennas. This work was initiated during a collaboration with Toyota Research, Japan, who located a Visiting Researcher in the group for over a year. Liu was Hall’s PhD student and Lucas-Borja a Visiting Researcher for 9 months, at PhD level, from The University of Valencia, Spain. The paper was part of the nomination of Hall for the IEEE John Kraus Antenna Award (2012).
