A New Worldview For Craft Education in the 21st Century

Craft theory and epistemology is still in its infancy. In 2009 the ‘Crafticulation’ international conference in Helsinki was the significant international opportunity that year to meet with fellow craft practitioners, writers and thinkers. Wilson’s research analysed different types of knowledge, ie objective scientific knowledge and the knowledge associated with craft practice and its potential contribution to shaping the academy of the 21st century. This chapter argues that the concept of reason within the modern academy needs to expand in order to address the present fragmentation that exists. An expanded concept of reason is essential in addressing the complexity of modern problems, including the limits of scientific measurement & prediction, the relationship between biology and technology and the continuing development of computers and electronic devices etc. The chapter concludes by recommending an expanded epistemology that unites both craft and science.
