<01>We show that scaling beyond the Heisenberg limit is possible for parameter estimation tasks. We show that when a suitable entanglement-generating unitary operator depending on a parameter is applied on N qubits in parallel, a precision of the order of 2-N in estimating the parameter may be achieved. This exponentially improves the precision achievable in classical and in quantum nonentangling strategies. Since our proposal, an experiment showing scaling beyond the Heisenberg limit has appeared in Nature 471, 486 (2011) doi:10.1038/nature09778 citing our work.
