Probabilistic white matter fiber tracking using particle filtering and von Mises-Fisher sampling
<23>First fully documented attempt to use particle filtering for tractogarphy in DT-MRI. Undertaken in collaboration with Gerig at UNC. Zhang's was RS supervised by Hancock, whose visit to at UNC was funded by Department Gibbs Plessey award. Thesis was runner up in 2009 BCS distinguished dissertation competition. Theoretical rigour comes from Bayesian modelling of fiber propagation using Fisher von Mises sampling. Experimental comparison with competitor methods available at the time. Paper influential on current work in fiber tractography, including groups at Harvard and CNRS. Work instrumental in securing Hancock's Wolfson Research Merit Award.
