Additional information

The major barriers to commercialisation of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) are cost and durability, both of which can be alleviated by lowering the temperature of operation (~550°C). To do this requires the cathode of the SOFC to be highly active for the electrochemical reduction of oxygen in air at ~550°C.

Atomistic simulations in La2NiO4+d revealed, for the first time, how the cooperative tilting of the oxygen octahedral allows the oxygen interstitial to diffuse. This highly active cathode enables lower temperature operation, which reduces cost and increases durability — the major barriers to commercialisation of SOFCs.
