English abstract

This essay seeks to re-think the concept of image not as pictorial representation but as a poesis of image conceived as a complex sign while also operating with a singular Gestalt and reference. I take the concept of image from Pound’s definition of Imagism and re-read this through the general sign theory and phenomenology of philosopher C.S. Peirce. Referring to contemporary text-image artworks, I aim to bring a visual arts perspective into the field of semiotics. My central argument developed from a paper that I was invited to give at an international semiotics symposium, Bilder BeSchreiben, University of Kassel, 2007.
