Flexural strength and defect behaviour of polygranular graphite under different states of stress
A unique approach of 2D/3D displacement-mapping by digital image correlation of optical and X-ray tomographic data, coupled with FE modelling, applied to crack nuclei in nuclear graphite in support of a key AGR life-extension project with EDF Energy. The observations show stress state changes strength due to plastic constraint, leading to more general models for structural integrity being developed in EPSRC EP/J019992/1. Since applied to indentation of metals (Mg, ODS steels) and composites (Al-SiC, SiC-SiC, Al-Ti), and forms the basis of our new “rich-tomography” research direction for damage modelling and small specimen property measurement in extreme environments.
