A homologous series of structures on the surface of SrTiO3(110).
The final paper of a series of 15 on the atomic-structure of surfaces on STO. The atomic-surface structures of a family of (n x 1) reconstructions on the SrTiO3 (110) surface are analysed through a combination of transmission electron diffraction, STM experiments and image simulations, and DFT modelling. The significance is that the surface stoichiometry appears to drive the surface-structure, not the other way around, so oxide surface structures can be controlled at will. This has important implications in terms of surface reactivity and physical properties such as wetability by metals which are critical to making electrical contacts onto oxides.
