High resolution electron back-scatter diffraction analysis of thermally and mechanically induced strains near carbide inclusions in a superalloy
In most metallic systems under most loading and environmental conditions damage nucleation and failure initiates from hard brittle particles. Here we use state of the art EBSD analysis, pioneered by the group, to map in unprecedented detail the stress tensor and dislocation density distributions near such particles in a real engineering alloy. The work has led to 10 further publications on modelling the behaviour and trial measurements on other systems with industrial collaborators Rolls-Royce. The method will be used in studying crack initiation in very high cycle fatigue under the new SILOET2 project (£350k) funded by TSB and Rolls-Royce.
