This paper investigates the 2-D plane stress deformation of an assembly of rods, providing detailed data confirming development of heterogeneity at an early stage of shearing. The scale of patterns of heterogeneity suggests that typical laboratory samples are often too small to give the granular material the necessary kinematic freedom. This work was conducted under a formal collaboration with the Universities of Grenoble and Bristol.
