This paper describes research from a 36 month Dorothy Hodgkin PG Award (Grant EP/P501989-1) / Industry funded project. It presents data that are used to identify the mechanisms associated with fly ash, which make it effective in reducing sulfate-heave during lime-stabilization of soil. The findings of the research have been reported in (i) a technical datasheet of the UK Quality Ash Association, 2010 and (ii) a Britpave publication ‘Stabilisation of sulfate-bearing soils - guidelines for best practice’, 2011, which should facilitate fly ash uptake by industry for supressing sulfate-heave in the treatment of soil.
