Additional information

The paper resulted from an EPSRC grant (GR/S27368/01) under its Physics-Engineering Programme. It reports the results of a successful collaborative modelling study with the University of Oslo that demonstrated, for the first time, (i) the role of convective instability in determining the conditions for wave breaking of fully-nonlinear internal solitary waves (ISWs) in 2 layer, stably-stratified fluids, (ii) the combined and separate contributions of convective and shear instability mechanisms in the development of the wave breaking process and (iii) experimental verification of the predictions of a fully nonlinear mathematical analysis of ISWs propagating in 2-layer fluid systems.
