Additional information

The paper derives from research funded by a Foundation for the Built Environment studentship jointly held with the Building Research Establishment. It explores the effects of placing cast, in-situ concrete structural elements in contact with soils contaminated with selected trace metals. This paper is novel in that it takes a multivariate approach and also examines the depth to which such contaminants are likely to penetrate concrete. A model for predicting the effect on cement hydration kinetics is developed. The paper also discusses the practical implications of the paper's findings and approaches to overcoming problems posed by such contaminants..
