Additional information

Intergranular strains in stainless steel caused by start-up/shut-down load cycles (representative of UK nuclear power plant) are measured in-situ at high temperature by neutron diffraction and related (for the first time) to anelastic effects. This work has inspired new research at the OU, Bristol University and Imperial College supported by the EDF Energy High Temperature Centre. The OU is now developing a £0.25m creep-fatigue rig for in-situ neutron measurements at the International ISIS neutron facility (Ref: Prof. R. McGreevy, Director of the ISIS Neutron Facility, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK).
