A new experimental set-up designed for the investigation of irradiation of nanosystems in the gas phase: a high intensity mass-and-energy selected cluster beam
Molecular clusters provide powerful test systems to translate insights from studies of isolated molecules to understanding processes on surfaces and in condensed materials. This work presents a unique experimental system to produce intense beams of mass selected cluster ions. This can provide target beams for experiments probing radiation-induced processes in clusters relevant to nano-lithography and damage processes in biological material. Moreover, the instrument can be adapted for low energy cluster deposition on surfaces with exceptional beam control for applications in nanotechnology and the development of novel electronic, optical and catalytic materials.
