Dr Garton drew on her primary research on teacher beliefs in English language teaching carried out in 2003 with 5 interviewees. She brings her original empirical interview data and her contribution to the analysis focuses on the microanalysis of turn construction in interview data.

Garton and Copland worked entirely collaboratively on the remainder of the article, jointly writing background and discussion sections. They consider this to be a joint output in every respect.
