Biosensors and lab-on-chip technologies show promise in some areas but as yet there is limited use for early diagnosis of virus or bacterial infection. The observed enhancement of the transverse surface wave shown here has great significance for the detection of immobilised virus or bacteria on a planar substrate. This work and our previous papers on ZnO continue to attract great interest from our Chinese colleagues and we are applying for funding to continue this work.
