This article is based on research funded by the ESRC. It was the first study to empirically investigate predictions of the influential dual-mechanism model within the context of lexical retrieval difficulties within primary school-aged children. This work has helped to more closely identify the parameters of difficulty experienced by children with these lexical impairments and has helped contribute to theoretical understandings of how languages are learned and represented.
