Double-weighted statement

Victorians Against the Gallows, the first extensive analysis of capital punishment abolitionism in Victorian Britain, examines the personnel, leaders and geography of a significant movement; assesses interactions between abolitionists and the Home Office; and treatment of the gallows and abolition within Victorian culture. Gendered, working-class and imperial dimensions are studied for the first time. A diverse primary source base includes over 40 capital case files in the National Archives, a comprehensive survey of pamphlets; and detailed analysis of novels, poetry and newspapers. The complete bibliography, published online, is 48 pages.
