Double-weighted statement

The Material Letter in Early Modern England is the first major comprehensive study of early modern letters, exploring the whole field of letters as a genre and of letter-writing as a social and cultural practice. The book is the result of fifteen years of research; it surveys thirty large collections of correspondence spread around the UK and in major repositories in the US; examines more than 10,000 individual letters and over 100 early modern manuscript letter books. Something of the density and complexity of the book is conveyed by the fifty-six pages of notes and the forty-page select bibliography.
