Ceramics and Print The Third Edition is a comprehensive revision of the text first published in 1994 (second edition 2002). It is the outcome of documentary, practice based and curatorial research undertaken in studio, international workshops and galleries since 2002. With significant new content the book has been completely restructured to reflect the manner in which contemporary ceramic artists engage with print and material processes. The interdisciplinary investigation has resulted in a significantly re-written text articulating new knowledge and developments. Completely new visual and textual content enhances contextual understandings through a re-assessment of historical factors and contemporary practice. On a technical level, the research investigates how digital and green technologies are making impacts on ways of working, as well as creating entirely new methodologies of realizing artwork. There are additional new sections on transfer methodologies, decals, laser prints, photosensitive polymer plates, 3D printing and photographic processes. The research demonstrates how print forms an integral part of the visual language of contemporary ceramics. From low-tech monotypes through to intaglio, relief, serigraphy, three-dimensional printing, photographic processes and digital laser decals, an extensive range of graphic techniques are now employed on clay and other vitreous surfaces. The text is illustrated throughout with selected process imagery as well as the works of leading ceramic artists.
