Montenegro: A Modern History
This book covers the period between recognition of Montenegro’s independence at the 1878 Congress of Berlin, through the Balkan Wars, both World Wars, the disintegration of the Yugoslav state and the reinstatement of independence in 2006. It uses a significant number of primary and secondary sources (in both English and in Serbian/Bosnia/Croatian) ranging from printed material to interviews with political and cultural elites. It comprises 1069 footnotes and an extensive bibliography. The analytical framework focuses on the role and actions of competing elites and their role in shaping the complex dynamics that have characterised modern Montenegrin, Yugoslav and post-Yugoslav history.
