English abstract

This article describes ground-breaking research into digital approaches to text markup, in collaboration with colleagues from the CHARTA (http://www.charta.es/), an international scholarly network which has created its own standard for encoding Spanish language historical texts held in Spanish or Spanish American archives. In spite of the advances in text markup methodologies pioneered by the digital humanities, the challenges of recording deep-level editorial interpretation in pre-modern historical texts are immense, and this article reflects on the methodological challenges and benefits of applying structured electronic markup in scholarly editions of Spanish archival documents.
