Development and validation of a novel bioreactor system for load- and perfusion-controlled tissue engineering of chondrocyte-constructs.
This paper represents the culmination of a successful European collaboration (IMBIOTOR) led by Professor Shelton at QMUL. It details the final realisation of an intelligent bioreactor designed for tissue engineering cartilage. The novelty of the design was in its scalability and reproducibility, incorporating intelligent conditioning, involving compression and perfusion. This was achieved using sensors and feedback coupled with predictive modelling to address the issues of biological variability between chondrocyte populations and changes to the scaffolds during the culture period. The design has been extended for use by three research partners (Leipzig, Eindhoven and QMUL).
