The production of bio-oil from biomass fast pyrolysis is a complex process both technically and economically. This paper represents the most rigorous and comprehensive effort yet to establish a true production cost through a comprehensive engineering-based techno-economic analysis. The results are being used in academic studies across the globe (e.g. USA, Australia, France, Turkey) to inform policy analysis, feasibility studies and detailed business cases. The methodology developed in the paper is now being applied in follow-on projects dealing with ammonia production from biomass (SUPERGEN - EPSRC) and with intermediate pyrolysis of wastes (PYROGAS - EC Marie Curie IAPP).
