Additional information

The challenge was to understand the fundamental structural of bioactive glasses since the structural sites present will be intimately related to their release properties in physiological fluids (e.g. plasma/ saliva), and hence the bioactivity of the material. Detailed structural knowledge is therefore a prerequisite for optimising material design. Here we report the first detailed structural knowledge at an atomistic level. The results provide insight into solubility of these materials and enable a better understanding of the bioactivity of the material. This paper provided the first detailed experimental data which is invaluable for comparing and validating current computer simulation models.
