Additional information

This paper reports results from an EPSRC CASE studentship with Severn Trent Water plc (CASE/CNA/06/28). The permeameter instrument described has been used and evaluated in at least 10 wetland treatment systems (reed beds) belonging to this company (contact Peter.Vale@severntrent.co.uk). Use of the instrument has yielded new information and insights about the flow paths and efficiency of the treatment systems, leading us to propose a new approach to the design and sizing of these systems to provide longer life and less frequent maintenance. This is the only instrument that can measure clogging profiles three dimensionally.
