Exploring the Explorers : Spaniards in Oceania 1519-1794
This book has required extensive research in archives located in three continents: Australasia, North and South America and Europe. The fragmentary nature of the sources (manuscript, printed, and cartographical, 1513-1794) meant that the data collection process lasted more than ten years. Manuscripts employed had to be compared, as they included copies of explorers’ accounts with considerable variations, while archaeological evidence had to be used to ascertain locations in the Pacific. All this work was needed to substantiate this wide-ranging, interdisciplinary study that complements yet contests the current (and I argue monolithic) paradigm of colonial history, dominated by Atlantic Studies.
