A generic, simple and versatile method for measuring electric dipole moments, that will allow the historical gap between theory and experiment to be bridged, has been developed and verified for alkali-metal atoms. We are using the results to inform our own design of a quantum computing prototype processor, however the method can be used to inform different designs of solid state hybrid architectures for quantum computing and for evaluating different materials.
