Additional information

This paper reports the first glucose controller for management of Type-1 diabetes based on beta-cell physiology. This has enabled development of a bio-inspired artificial pancreas which is currently undergoing clinical trials on 20 human diabetic subjects at Hammersmith Hospital. This is significant since bio-inspired control achieves improved performance over conventional methods (PID) and has been miniaturised in CMOS. Representing a body of work which has resulted in two technology transfer grants (2008, 2013) funded by the Wellcome Trust amounting to £1.6M, two patents (WO/2010/142,734, WO/2013/024,044) and 6 Journal/6 conference papers in addition to an invited lecture at ATTD 2012.
