Additional information

Smart appliances will have a significant role in future electricity networks, counteracting the increasing variability of supply, arising from growing exploitation of renewable energy sources. This paper provides the first fully decentralized thermostatic control strategy (with supporting theory-based evaluation tools) for refrigeration units connected to the grid. The proposed strategy, based on a novel concept of randomized switching, is simple to implement (the switching rates of individual refrigerators are varied according to the grid frequency) and avoids potentially harmful post-fault surges in demand, experienced with linear controllers.
