Self-Assembly of Large and Small Molecules into Hierarchically Ordered Sacs and Membranes
This paper reports the self-assembly between a macromolecule and a small peptide of opposite charge, that results in the formation of self-sealing sacs and membranes of arbitrary size and shape. This work led to the filling of patents (US 2008/0199431 A1; WO 2008/121447) news releases (Washington Post, ABC News) and to several invited talks (8th World Biomaterials Congress, 2008, The Netherlands; TERMIS-EU Annual Meeting, 2008, Portugal). This remarkable self-assembling has influenced the field of dynamic self-assembly. Subsequent publications have emerged based on this seminal work (DOI: 10.1039/C3BM60019J; 10.1002/adfm.201201065; 10.1002/adfm.201101538;
