Optical monitoring of gases with cholesteric liquid crystals.
This paper reports a new concept to optically monitor gases such as carbon dioxide and oxygen using cholesteric liquid crystals doped with reactive chiral compounds. The paper led to a number of invited and keynote presentations at international conferences incl.. Gordon Conference on Liquid Crystals, ACS and SPIE. Several patent applications were filed by the Dutch Polymer Institute (DPI) (WO2009150610; NXP EP2500094) and DSM Dyneema (WO 20131130808). Also, two new projects were initiated to develop optical sensors through the Plastic Electronics DTC (together with Imperial College, £200k ) and an industrial funded project with DSM Dyneema (£60k ).
