Additional information

<24> Using multiple single-unit recordings from rodents and machine learning techniques, this highly cited study examines the neuronal dynamics underlying performance in an ecologically valid multiple-item working memory task. It shows how anterior cingulate cortical networks advance through a sequence of coherent population states during task performance that is well described by sequential activation of 'cell assemblies'. It thus provides important evidence for one of the most influential computational concepts in neuroscience, and demonstrates the feasibility of single-trial analysis when using advanced statistical techniques.
