Eclipse
"Eclipse" extends my research with real-time score generation, where musicians engage with notation created in real time during the performance of the work. In "Eclipse", a computer-generated graphic score is revealed to both audience and performers during the execution of the piece. The open nature of the work and the notation process requires that the performers develop performance strategies in advance of any realisation of the piece. The animated graphic objects are created in such a way that they allow for interpretation of register, duration, articulation, dynamic, density, timbre, gesture, structure and spatial distribution. The title refers to the visual masking that occurs in the piece when the density of objects on the score results in some being visible and some obscured. The work was commissioned as part of a Parry Williams Fellowship at Bangor University (2010) and several versions of the piece have since been realised, including a version for string quartet.
