English abstract

In 2009 France’s teachers, professors and lecturers went on a strike that lasted far longer than in 1968 to express their disapproval of Nicolas Sarkozy’s reform of HE. The Princess of Clèves, a heroine of a 17th-century novel, become the iconic figure of the movement. This article investigates the role of "classic" culture and of the literary canon in contemporary France in moments of high ideological intensity.
